Cal Waldron pleased with PHC despite relegation

Cal Waldron, the PHC cricket director, believes the club made a good account of themselves despite being relegated from the T20 Premier Division.

PHC lost all of their fixtures to make an immediate return to the First Division after accepting a place in the Premier Division when Western Stars pulled out of the league.

Waldron feels the club could have avoid taking the plunge had they capitalised on the opportunities that came their way.

“There were one or two games I felt we should’ve won and if we had we could’ve stayed up,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“But the players were eager for the opportunity to play against the higher-seeded teams and I think they made a good account of themselves. It was a good attempt, but unfortunately we didn’t survive.”

Waldron said the T20 campaign provided him with an opportunity to assess the new players that arrived at the club this season ahead of the start to the 50 overs season.

“It was an opportunity to have a look at some of the newer players that we’ve got,” he said.

“We had about four new players that came this season, so I had an opportunity to see what they can do batting and bowling-wise. “I still have to look at everybody to see how I can progress this team and be competitive in the 50 overs structure.”

PHC’s T20 campaign plummeted to its lowest point after being skittled out for 13, with only one PHC batter contributing to the total, in a crushing ten-wicket defeat against Somerset.

“That was unfortunate and we put it down to a mental block,” Waldron said. “Guyshave got to be able to assess and readjust accordingly.

“You never want to go out there and get bowled out for 13. But at the end of the day it happened and you have to learn from it and move forward.”
