Fabian Allen produced career-best figures to guide Pembroke Panthers to a 54-run win against Bermuda Smash Invitational champions Hamilton Parish Hurricanes at North Field, National Sports Centre on Sunday.

The Jamaican left-arm spinner and former Indian Premier League player claimed five wickets for a mere two runs during a menacing spell that triggered a massive collapse as the Hurricanes lost six wickets for 20 runs in the space of six overs.

He also achieved double-wicket maidens in his final two overs which all but secured his team’s victory and earned him man-of-the-match honours.

“That’s the best spell I have ever bowled in my life,” Allen told The Royal Gazette.

“It was a very good spell today, five for two. I would take that any day in any cricket.

“I just bowled in the right areas and got the result. The boys supported me fielding and running around.”

After going for just one run in the first over of the Hurricanes innings with the new ball, Allen was brought back for another spell at the start of the eleventh over and proceeded to dismantle the middle and lower order of the champions with surgical precision.

Bowling from the northern end of the ground with the wind at his back, he bowled Alex Dore (16), who was attempting to sweep the ball on the onside, with his third delivery.

Allen then tightened the screws in his second over as he claimed the scalps of Derrick Brangman and Clay Darrell in the space of three balls without conceding a run. Namibian all-rounder Gerhard Erasmus took a spectacular one-handed diving catch at slip to dislodge Brangman (0) before Darrell (0) was beaten by the flight of the ball and bowled shortly after.

The West Indies star also picked up two wickets in his final over, again without conceding a run, to complete his impressive five-wicket haul after Erasmus took another fine catch at slip to dismiss Quentin Sampson (18), while Marcus Bean was grabbed by Jaiden Manders at wide mid on.

Allen received solid support from seamer Jermal Proctor, who claimed three for 13 from 3.4 overs bowling, including the prized wicket of Terryn Fray, who was caught by Manders at backward square leg.

The Hurricanes got off to a slow start and were 50 for three in pursuit of Panthers’ 130 all out in 19 overs midway through their innings and they lost a host of wickets attempting to accelerate the run rate.

Captain Fray (20) was the only other Hurricane batter in double figures as four others failed to get off the mark. The champions were dismissed for 76 in 17.4 overs, the lowest score in the tournament this year.

Earlier, Allen stroked a timely 28, from 23 balls, to spearhead a lower-order fightback that carried Panthers to a total that proved beyond their opponents’ reach.

He came to the crease with his team wobbling at 80 for six in the eleventh over after electing to take first strike on another excellent batting track and added a vital 30 runs with Sharye Tavares (4) for the seventh wicket.

Allen, whose innings included two sixes, departed in the seventeenth over after holing to Sampson at long on, and the end would be swift for Panthers as remaining batters Amari Ebbin (2) and Zeko Burgess (11) were removed in the space of six balls.

Captain Dominic Sabir led the Panthers batting with an aggressive 41 from 33 balls, which included two sixes and four fours. He also added 34 runs for the second wicket with Allan Douglas Jr (11) and dominated a 22-run fourth-wicket partnership with Manders (2) before he was caught by Fray at wide mid on from the bowling of Jonté Smith.

Brangman (three for 29) and Bean (three for 34) were the pick of the Hurricanes bowling.

Cal Waldron, the Panthers coach, was delighted to see his team chalk up their second win in as many days after toppling Smith’s Sixers 24 hours earlier.

“I am thoroughly pleased,” he said. “We didn’t quite get as many runs as we wanted to, but we showed true character restricting them bowling in the right areas.

“Fabian Allen took a five-for bowling in all the right areas and put pressure on the batsmen, so kudos to the guys for a job well done.”

Hurricanes coach Clay Smith, who made two changes to his team from the one that beat Sandys Spartans by five wickets 24 hours earlier, put his team’s loss down to Allen’s brilliant bowling.

“He had an extremely good bowling spell so that was the difference right there,” he said.

“He bowled extremely well and we couldn’t adjust to the conditions, something we have to look at and see what we can do better next time to give ourselves a better chance of getting the total.

“I thought we bowled well to restrict them to 130 and it could’ve been less had we held on to one or two of our catches.

“There’s things we did really well but areas of the game that we still need to brush up on.”
