Peter Bromby is excited to “stroll down memory lane” when he makes his first appearance in decades in the International One Design (IOD) World Championship in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

The four-times Bermuda Olympic sailor has every right to be pumped up for the big occasion having enjoyed enormous success competing in the regatta over the years.

Bromby has three IOD world titles under his belt and is the only skipper to have won the regatta three years on the trot.

“I am looking forward to going up the IOD Worlds, which is a bit of a stroll down memory lane for me,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s been 30 years since I did the IOD worlds and lucky enough I’ve got a great group of guys going with me.”

Bromby’s crew includes Martin Siese (tactician), Bill McNiven (trimmer), Ron Stan (bow) and Rick Echard (mainsheet).

The Bermudian helmsman has fond memories competing in Marblehead having won the bronze medal there at the 1997 Star World Championships.

Bromby is also looking forward to competing alongside Echard, who also has considerable experience competing at the venue, which the team hope to capitalise on at the regatta, hosted by Eastern Yacht Club.

“Echard is from up in Northeast Harbor and is a long-term visitor to Bermuda,” he said.

“I’ve known him since before I was racing IODs and he’s joining us up there in Marblehead. He’s also spent some time in Marblehead so looking forward to having him on board.”

Bromby dominated the IOD Class in the early 1990s and is hoping to pick up where he left off as he goes in search of a fourth IOD world title.

Bermuda will be represented by two teams at this year’s regatta as skipper Kelsey Durham is also competing in the ten-race series along with crew Adam Barboza (tactician), Heath Foggo (mainsheet), Joanne Rogers (pit) and Michael Richold (bow).

Durham is hoping to finish in the top half of the 12-strong fleet and is keen to pick up pointers from the experienced and highly decorated Bromby.

“I feel pretty good and just looking to learn a lot from Bromby. He is a master and I have never raced him in a big event like this, so it’s a learning experience going with him,” he said.

“He’s won many of these IOD World Championships, so just looking to learn from him and compete against the best IOD sailors.

“We’ve been out training every Wednesday and Saturday. Every chance we get we’re trying to get out.

“We’re just trying to finish at the top half of the fleet. Everyone is trying to win, so that’s the end goal.”

Bermuda’s contingent have their work cut competing among a stellar fleet that also boasts defending champion John Burnham, Bill Widnall and Jonathan Farrar, who have won a staggering 21 titles between them.

To ensure a level playing field teams change boats after every race, while owners are prohibited from sailing their own boat.

The ten-race series in the IOD sloop gets under way tomorrow and concludes next Friday.
