More than 30 Bermudians will discuss adjusting to life in Britain in an upcoming documentary.

Briton Charles Reilly moved back to the UK in 2017 after living in Bermuda for decades and was inspired to create the documentary after seeing how many Bermudians had chosen a new life in Nottingham.

He explained: “I decided, just walking around the city centre or online, there’s a lot of Bermudians who have moved to the UK, so I wanted to see how they were managing with the transition, that’s why I came up with this idea.”

Mr Reilly added: “When I first came to Bermuda, I got culture shock — like, if you don’t say ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’, it’s extremely rude — so I wanted to see how is it for Bermudians coming here, what can’t they understand, that sort of thing.”

He encouraged Bermudians living in the Midlands — which includes the cities of Nottingham, Coventry and Birmingham — to reach out on social media.

Mr Reilly said he was surprised by how many responded.

The first episode of the documentary will feature 35 Bermudians and Mr Reilly walking around the Nottingham area wearing traditional Bermuda shorts and knee socks.

He said: “I’ve got people from all ages from their mid-twenties right up to their seventies. I have one guy who’s been here for 40 years and I’m speaking to others who have been here two years.

“People think people move to the UK for money, but there’s a lot more reasons why people move there.

“The UK offers a lot more things — people move for medical reasons or educational reasons and some people move because it’s too hot.”

The project even features Bermuda-themed Nottingham eatery, Hooked Café and Grill, where Mr Reilly recently had two fish sandwiches.

The restaurant, opened by Bermudian pastry chef and former cricketer Dale Benjamin, also offers peas and rice, curried pies and other Bermuda cuisine.

Mr Reilly joked: “This fish sandwich came out and was so good. It tasted like I was back in Bermuda.”

He said the documentary, which he hoped to show on Bermuda television in the autumn, will be light-hearted and feature Bermudians playing rugby, throwing axes and enjoying other activities.

He explained: “Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood so I also want to take a load of contestants to an archery target shooting.”

“I want it to be light-hearted because Bermudians are characters. Wherever you go with Bermudians, you’re going to have fun.”

Mr Reilly added: “There is the eccentricity of me running around the country in Bermuda shorts and getting reactions from people, so there is an English appeal to it. But the story really is about Bermudians and how they’re settling in.”
