Five pupils head to France on three-week study trip
Five youngsters will build on their cultural and language expertise during a three-week educational trip to France this month.
L’Alliance Française les Bermudes will send five girls to the city of Cannes to build on their French language skills while learning about the local culture.
The trip will involve Maya Bean from CedarBridge Academy; Alexandra Crippen from The Berkeley Institute; Naomi Crofton and April Cherry from Somersfield Academy; and Ava Moorghen from Mount Saint Agnes Academy.
The French Scholarship Competition is held annually for pupils aged between 15 and 17 years who are studying French in Bermuda.
The girls will stay in Paris for three days after their stay in Cannes before returning home in time for Cup Match.
The trip, according to a spokeswoman, will allow for the children to expand their cultural horizons and form friendships across schools and borders.
A cultural charity will host a mid-July celebration honouring a pivotal moment in the French Revolution.
L’Alliance Française les Bermudes will celebrate Bastille Day on July 14 with a French dinner at Déjà View.
The event will feature the French music duo Tête-a-Tête with accompaniment from The Big Reveal Band.
Bastille Day commemorates the 1789 storming of the Bastille, an armoury and political prison that served as a symbol of monarchical authority.
The revolutionaries’ seizing of the armoury acted as a turning point in the revolution and helped to unite the French people.
Tickets for the dinner are available online at ptix.bm until Sunday.
Frederique Compain Nappée, the president of AFB, said the study abroad competition was “very popular” and involved more than 120 children, turning it into the group’s most important charitable endeavour.
He added: “It is rewarding to see such support from our entire community.”
The charity was established to promote French language and culture on the island.
In addition to the study-abroad trip, L’Alliance Française les Bermudes offers French and francophone families the chance to enrol their children from the age of 4 in the charity’s Saturday French classes.
Other activities include a monthly French film club, wine tastings and Bastille Day celebrations.
He also thanked the group’s “dedicated team of volunteers” who ran their programmes.
