Skippers Alan Frith and Joshua Greenslade led their team to an historic victory in the inaugural Bermuda Team Racing National Championships at the weekend.

The pair upstaged rival skippers Benn Smith and Christian Ebbin 2-0 in the best-of-three final in Hamilton Harbour on Saturday to earn the distinction of being the first to win the two versus two team racing event in the J80 class.

“Overall, the regatta was fantastic and we're obviously thrilled to have won but more importantly there was a ton of very competitive team racing and a number of races that could have easily gone the other way,” Frith told The Royal Gazette.

“The conditions were more windy than we'd ideally like to see for team racing. We're going faster and the boats are harder to control, which makes the tight manoeuvring required for team racing more risky, but all three teams handled it really well and it didn’t slow down anyone’s tactics.

“The biggest key, as it usually is in team racing, was to get control of the other team as soon as possible. Josh and I were able to do that really successfully in the finals, starting in a controlling position on both pairs and maintaining those controlling positions around the course. Other than that, our crews were both really sharp, so we avoided costly mistakes.

“Benn Smith, Christian Ebbin, Mikey Wollman and William Reid and their crews made for really challenging racing and pushed us to get better, which will be a big help as we continue our training for the World Championships in Stockholm next month.”

It is the second time Frith has enjoyed success this summer after winning the prestigious Edward Cross Long Distance Race along with sister Sarah last month.

The crew on the experienced sailor’s boat also included Ruth Mello-Cann, Sebastian Round and Samantha Dill, while Greenslade competed alongside Ellie Cumpsty, Emily Davis and Eli Furbert.

The regatta featured the teams initially competing in a round robin with the top two advancing to the final.

Smith and Ebbin produced the best record (4 wins) in the round robin, followed by Frith and Greenslade (two) and Reid and Wollman (one).

The championships, jointly organised by the Bermuda Team Racing Association and hosts Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, served as preparation for Bermuda’s two teams that will compete at next month’s Team Racing World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, also in the J80 class.

Greenslade has been appointed as the skipper of Boat 1, whose crew also includes Amelia Lewis, Aiden Young and Davis.

Frith will be at the helm of Boat 2 competing alongside Cecilia Wollman, Dill and Round.

The 2026 Team Racing World Championships will be held from August 12 to 16.

Bermuda finished tenth of the twelve teams at last year’s Team Racing World Championships in Newport, Rhode Island with four points.
