Bermuda bag four medals at Caribbean squash championships
Mason Smith continued his fine run at the Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Championships by clinching gold for the fourth consecutive year in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
The 12-year-old’s exploits resulted in Bermuda capturing four medals at the ongoing event, with two silver and a bronze.
Smith, the No 1 seed in the under-13 boys, defeated his team-mate and No 2 seed, Benjamin Sherratt 9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7, in the final.
Eli Carpol won silver in the under-19 boys after being bested 11-2, 11-5, 11-4, by the top seed Danny Henderson, of BVI, in the final.
In his maiden appearance at the event, Remy Horsfall clinched bronze in the boys under-11. He had a fine run before losing 11-8, 11-1, 11-2 to Evan Ghuran, of Trinidad & Tobago, in the semi-finals.
Hugo Adams defeated Coen Mack, of Trinidad, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, in the under-15 boys fifth place play-off. William Frith was sixth in the boys under-19, with McKenna Kyme sixth in the girls under-17.
The tournament, which concludes on Thursday, has moved to the team competition. In the boys team event, Smith and Sherratt put on a dominant display to record victories for Bermuda against Cayman Islands.
Smith had a tough encounter with Jonty Rodgers, before he prevailed 11-7, 11-4, 11-9, while Sherratt swept past Ylon Omar Chambers 11-1, 11-2, 11-3.
