Luke Fulton out of Cup Match as St George’s pick trial teams

Luke Fulton, right, has been ruled out of Cup Match

Luke Fulton will have to wait at least another year to regain his spot in the St George’s Cup Match team after being ruled out of the Annual Classic with a shoulder injury.

The Warwick player made his Cup Match debut in Somerset two-years ago and was hoping to regain his spot after being a reserve last year.

Clay Smith, the St George’s coach, said Fulton will be a “big miss” as his side try to reclaim the trophy.

“Unfortunately, Luke Fulton is unavailable for the final trial,” he said.

“He has had a niggling shoulder injury that has hampered his bowling so he has had to focus more on his batting. He will be a big miss as he has loads of potential as a fast bowler.

“We wish him well and hope that he can get everything sorted and come back fitter and stronger as he is definitely part of our future plans.”

The challengers will also need to fill the void left at the top of the order by Marcus Scotland, who was ruled out after failing to play any matches in the league for St David’s this season for personal reasons.

St George’s announced their teams for the final Cup Match trial match at Wellington Oval on Saturday following an intense training session on Wednesday, with Smith anticipating a good match as the players give their all in the hopes of making the final cut.

“We have two good teams, fairly balanced with loads of potential,” he said.

“I want to thank the coaching staff for doing an excellent job in helping the players prepare. It should be an entertaining day of cricket and I wish all the players the best.”

St George’s have also announced the team that will rest their title on the line in the Colts Cup Match at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

The holders’ squad is being led by Keegan Jones and also boasts vice-captain Sa-Qui Robinson, Logan Jones, Xavien James, Shane Robinson, Isaac Todd, Aaron Paynter, Enrique Minks, Keyan Webb, Zakai Minors, Duvontae Binns and reserves Sauri Walker, Jamere Jervis and Jahkai Burgess-Samuels.

St George’s retained their title last year after the match ended in a draw at Wellington Oval.
