Company donates $31,000 to cover Cup Match entry for seniors
Somerset Cricket Club have been presented with $31,000 covering the entry fee for seniors that attended this year’s Cup Match in the West End.
Bermuda’s seniors were granted free entry to the annual two-day classic through the support of sponsor Island Construction Services Ltd/ICS Tires.
ICS president Zane DeSilva presented Somerset Cricket Club president Richard Scott with the cheque at the company’s Devonshire headquarters.
“Before Cup Match Island Construction/ICS Tires agreed to pay for all the seniors that attended this year, and I am happy to say that we are here today to present the cheque to the president, Mr Richard Scott, on behalf of ICS Tires for allowing us to take care of our seniors,” he said.
“We thank you very much for allowing us to participate and I hope that all of our seniors that went to the game [enjoyed it], I certainly know that the Somerset fans enjoyed it, but I hope that our St George’s seniors enjoyed it too.”
Scott thanked DeSilva’s company for their efforts in supporting the island’s seniors.
“On behalf of Somerset Cricket Club, the officers and members of Somerset Cricket Club and our community, we would just like to say thank you, and I believe that I speak for the seniors as well,” he said.
“We were very grateful for your kind gesture and I believe that the seniors were very appreciative of it as well — we definitely saw that in the gates. We saw an increase in the number of seniors that attended.”
DeSilva said the company look forward to covering the admission fee at Cup Match for “years to come” if possible.
“This is something that we did to show our appreciation for the many years of business and loyalty that our customers have given. If, God willing, everything goes well for ICS Tires and Island Construction we look forward to this continuing for many years,” he said.
Holders Somerset won this year’s Cup Match by an innings and 90 runs to eclipse the previous record for the largest victory in the annual classic of an innings and 66 runs achieved by St George’s in 1962.
