An imports company has awarded two children of staff members a $2,500 university scholarship.

Ayr Cannonier and Zanna Minors each received the Polaris Holding Company Ltd Education Award as they entered their second year of college.

The award is given annually to eligible children of Polaris and its subsidiaries’ staff.

Cheryl Hayward-Chew, the chairwoman of Polaris, said: “Each year, we are honoured to support our team by providing these awards to their children.

“Our team works incredibly hard to provide essential services to Bermuda while simultaneously providing for their families.

“We’re happy to provide this support to our team’s families as well and wish Ayr and Zanna all the best in the upcoming year.”

Mr Cannonier, a three-time PHCLEA recipient, will start his second year at the University of East London, where he is pursuing a bachelor of economics degree.

The son of Ankoma Cannonier, a deck man at Stevedoring Services, he used his first award to complete the International Baccalaureate programme while studying at the United World College East Africa in Tanzania.

Ms Minors, the daughter of stevedoring superintendent Otis Minors, received her PHCLEA for the first time.

She is returning to Bermuda College to complete her associate’s degree in hospitality and management after completing her first year with a grade-point average of 2.99.

Recipients may receive as many as four awards, which can be applied towards tuition, room and board or airfare.
