Speed cameras are not yet keeping watch over the island’s roads, despite statements to the contrary being spread on social media.

While some have claimed that the cameras went live at a string of locations on September 1, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Security confirmed that the speed cameras were not yet up and running and the public would be updated.

The spokesman said: “There is still further work to be completed before the cameras are in operation.

“The Government will provide public information regarding the programme through official channels as appropriate.”

The high-tech cameras are expected to be installed at 30 locations across the island as part of a wider strategy to improve driving behaviour on Bermuda’s roads.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said in June that the cameras could be operational as soon as this month, but full deployment of the system, including the issuing of tickets, was not likely before Christmas.

He added that legislative amendments would be required before a single ticket can be issued to legitimise the cameras as a speed-detection device.
