The Corporation of Hamilton will work with some city businesses to improve waste disposal and cleaning in the coming days.

A spokeswoman said residues and stains on Hamilton sidewalks — often caused by food, oils and other liquids leaking from garbage bags — can be difficult to remove and debris swept directly onto city pavement contributes to further build-up

She explained: “The city carries out regular power washing and cleaning of sidewalks throughout Hamilton.

“However, stains and residue caused by these practices can be difficult to remove, and repeated occurrences can quickly undermine efforts to keep the city clean and welcoming.

“City officials will be contacting businesses directly in the coming days where recurring issues have been identified, to remind them of their responsibilities and encourage better waste disposal and cleaning practices.”

The spokeswoman urged all city business to ensure waste is properly contained and bags are secure and free from leaks before placing them out for collection, to keep bins in good condition and not leave them on the sidewalks after waste is collected.

Businesses were also reminded that cooking oil, collected in the city on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, must be properly contained, out for collection by 6am and only brought out at the appropriate times.

The spokeswoman added: “Our crews work hard to keep Hamilton’s streets and sidewalks clean, including through regular power washing, but we need businesses to play their part.”
