Steven Riley to call time on Team Bermuda after 40 years

Bermuda team: LeVinc Samuels, left, Anthony Hayward, Steven Riley, David Maycock, Lamar Richardson.

Steven Riley will bring 40 years of competing for Bermuda to an end when he competes in the Bowling World Cup next week.

Riley has been a stalwart of the national team as a player and team manager but will sign off from international competition in Munich, Germany, with the tournament taking place from October 12 to 21.

LeVinc Samuels, Lamar Richardson, David Maycock and Anthony Hayward will be in action at the event, with 48 countries taking each other on in singles and team match play.

The Bermuda squad will be hoping to improve on their last finishing position when they made the round of 16 in both the singles and team events in Hong Kong, but their task has got tougher with the format demanding an increase in numbers from the 32 nations that competed in Asia.

“I’m looking forward to this World Cup and competing at the highest level,” Richardson said. “The main goal is staying focus and trusting in his preparation, while helping the team achieve the best possible result.”

The team event, which is the most prestigious at the World Cup, will be conducted using the Baker System, whereby each country will play head-to-head matches against teams in their pool to determine who qualifies for the round of 16.

All members of team Bermuda competed in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo this summer and will use the experience gained there at the World Cup.
