Recall of meat items after warning by US officials
A recall notice has been issued for certain meat and poultry products from Bermuda stores.
Distributor Butterfield & Vallis told customers about a voluntary product recall announced by supplier Kayem Foods Inc, involving certain ready-to-eat packets.
A spokesman for Butterfield & Vallis said: “While this recall was initiated by the manufacturer, we are sharing this information to ensure customers are aware of the affected products and can take the appropriate action.”
The company added that the supplier, based in Chelsea, Massachusetts, was recalling about 1.58 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products owing to “potential temperature abuse during storage”.
“The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service advises that the affected products were produced between approximately March 31 and October 7, this year,” it said.
An FSIS recommendation was for consumers who have the affected products to return them to the store where they were bought for a credit.
Further information is available on the FSIS website, which noted that the items subject to recall have 026-2026 product labels.
They also have establishment numbers “EST. M/P 7839,” “EST. P 20935A” and “EST. M 9520” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The problem was discovered after the firm received a retail customer complaint regarding warm product temperatures at point of delivery on October 1, 2026.
There have been no confirmed reports of illness owing to consumption of the products. Anyone concerned about feeling unwell should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS was concerned that some products may be in consumers’ fridges, in which case customers were urged not to eat them and to throw away the items or return them to the place of purchase.
