Programme streamlines garage operations
The Transport Control Department is preparing to launch a programme which will give garage operators better guidance on their legislative obligations, including applicable licensing, safety, documentation and inspection requirements.
The Garage Compliance Programme, set for launch next month, is an aspect of efforts to modernise regulatory processes, strengthen oversight and improve compliance standards across the island, a government spokeswoman said.
She noted that the scheme, which supports the Garages Licensing Act 2022, will benefit garage operators and the wider public.
It promotes safer operating environments, strengthening consumer confidence and ensuring that businesses are held to consistent standards.
The TCD aims to improve accountability across the industry while supporting responsible garage operators, through the strengthened framework.
Owen Darrell, the transport minister, said: “When members of the public take their vehicles to a garage, they should have confidence that the business operates in accordance with established safety and licensing standards.
“This programme is part of our wider commitment to modernising government processes, strengthening regulatory oversight and ensuring that standards are applied consistently across the industry.
“We recognise that some businesses may need time to complete inspections, obtain documentation or make adjustments to their premises.
“Our intention is to work collaboratively with garage operators, providing clear guidance and a reasonable opportunity to meet their obligations.”
Garage operators have been urged to familiarise themselves with the requirements and begin gathering the necessary documentation.
Operators may contact the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service at bfrsinfo@gov.bm and the Department of Planning at planningfrontdesk@gov.bm for guidance on relevant requirements, documentation and inspection processes.
