Bermuda youngsters feature in Caribbean cricket showcase
Rising local cricket stars finished on the losing side in a Future Stars Under-23 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting T10 exhibition match between the Caribbean and Wider Commonwealth in Antigua on Sunday night.
The Caribbean Commonwealth dominated the match, winning by 43 runs after batting first and scoring 118 for five, while Wider Commonwealth managed only 75 for eight in reply.
Allrounder Isaiah O’Brien and wicketkeeper-batter Zerai Tomlinson featured the most prominently, while Keegan Jones and Sac-Qui Robinson played lesser roles.
Tomlinson, after keeping in the first innings, was the second-highest scorer for the Wider Commonwealth XI’s with 13 not out.
O’Brien opened the bowling and took one for 20 from his two overs, while also holding onto a difficult catch at deep square-leg to dismiss opener Pascal of Caribbean Commonwealth.
Turning to bat, O’Brien came in at No 4 and lasted six balls before being undone by the leg spin of Jamaican Tamarie Redwood.
Jones was in next but had scored just two when he flashed at a ball from Redwood well outside off stump and slashed to Murray fielding at point.
At No 7 was Robinson (four), who spent a short period batting with Bermudian comrade Tomlinson before Moses caught him off Belle.
Staged alongside the CHOGM proceedings under the theme “One Commonwealth, One Team,” the exhibition successfully showcased elite youth talent from member nations, celebrating sportsmanship, cultural exchange and sporting excellence.
Before the future stars took centre stage, heads of government from across the Commonwealth put their cricket skills on display in a T5 “contest” that was more comedic than athletic.
West Indies great Sir Vivian Richards successfully managed the Caribbean side to an 18-run triumph over ex-England captain David Gower’s Wider Commonwealth group of world leaders.
