Cruise ship bound for Bermuda changes course to Florida
An Aida Cruises ship headed for Bermuda has turned south to avoid a possible tropical system in the Atlantic.
The AIDAdiva left New York on Monday for a 20-day sojourn across the Caribbean with a stop planned in Bermuda yesterday.
However, the 823ft longship, which flies under the Italian flag, diverted to Port Canaveral in Florida, where it has docked for a few days before it heads onward to the Bahamas.
The ship will continue onward across the Caribbean before its final stop at Montego Bay, Jamaica, on November 22.
The incident is one of several this year in which bad weather conditions changed the course of cruise ships.
Late last month, the Independence of the Seas, which was travelling from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, to Bermuda, was rerouted to the Canadian city of Saint John in New Brunswick only hours before departure.
The last-minute itinerary change by the Royal Caribbean cruise was made because of bad weather caused by Tropical Storm Josephine.
Vision of the Seas, also with Royal Caribbean, was initially due to sail to Dockyard on October 17, during a five-day cruise from Maryland, but was rerouted to Canada the night before because of strong winds.
Weather conditions prevented passengers from leaving the cruise even after it reached port, prompting Royal Caribbean to offer compensation for the change.
In April,Valiant Lady, with Virgin Voyages, alerted passengers to a change three days before its intended departure, prompting complaints from passengers and one couple going viral after voicing their disappointment over social media.
The Bermuda-bound ship changed its itinerary at the eleventh hour owing to forecasts of poor weather.
