Motorists are being asked to play their part in marking a milestone on Bermuda’s journey to democracy.

Drivers will be asked to ride with their lights on to commemorate the moves that led to the island staging its first democratic General Election in a celebration entitled Let Our Lights Shine.

Activist Glenn Fubler said the event on November 13 was envisaged to last all day.

It is all part of the 60th anniversary of the London Constitutional Conference for Bermuda in 1966, which ultimately led to the first General Election two years later.

Mr Fubler also revealed plans to unveil a mural on November 15 at a carnival-style celebration at Devonshire Recreation Club.

He said the lighting-up movement for vehicles was also to “promote peace on our roads, and in our communities and peace in global events”.

“Thankfully, the American people voted in a way a few days ago that has shifted, through the vote, where the world is going to be and moving towards peace. Hopefully, teachers will actually use this opportunity to teach about democracy.”

He then told how artist Jahbarri Wilson is to showcase his mural.

Mr Wilson said: “I have painted some amazing Bermudian icons that not many people have spoken about.

“I had to learn about these names after school from my grandparents and Glenn, the older generation. But I had to be curious, and if I was not curious then I would not have known.

“So I am trying to bring the faces up so people and children can say, ‘Who is that? What is that?’ and then the conversation can start.”

He told The Royal Gazette that he began work on the mural in July, adding: “I have done a few other murals before.”

The unveiling will form part of a day of free community celebrations including songs by Tsilala Brock and Septimus, with the In Motion Dancers, family-friendly games, DJ Breeze and food vendors.

Mr Fubler said: “Rain or shine, the event will take place. Ideally outside, but if it’s inclement, an amended celebration will be held in the club hall.”
