Champions crowned in Bermuda Tennis Open
There was revenge on the court at WER Joell Tennis Stadium on Sunday as the runner-up at last week’s Bermuda Tennis Open came out on top in the second tournament.
Kacper Szymkowiak, from Poland, lost 6-2, 6-2 to Jamaican Blaise Bicknell last week and the same two players battled through the draw again this week to contest the final on No 1 court on Sunday morning.
But it was Symkowiak who came out top in the rematch, winning 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in an epic encounter to close out two weeks of fantastic tennis on island.
The doubles final on Saturday was won by the pick-up combination of Juan Dominguez Collardo, from Guatemala, and Ayden Osorio, from Curacao.
They beat the American duo of Jeffrey Fradkin and Gray Voelzke 7-6, 6-3.
After a fortnight of fabulous action, Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president Michael Wolfe is determined to bring more tournaments to the island.
“We had two great weeks of tennis and we congratulate the winners and thank our sponsors,” Wolfe said.
“Without them it wouldn’t be possible and we had some great tennis. The weather held out. We’re looking forward to doing this again next year and we would like to thank everyone who came out and made this possible.
“We’d also like to thank everybody behind the scenes and look out for more successful events from the Lawn Tennis Association.”
