Kevin Morris

The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Epsilon Theta Lambda Chapter, will be hosting their eighth annual Alpha Beautillion.

The event is set to take place at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday night.

Alpha Phi Alpha Beautillion committee chairman Aubrey Pennyman says it promises to be a stellar affair.

The beaus are Saltus Grammar student Freddie Wade, Warwick Academy student Kevin Morris, Bermuda Institute's Jonathan Jervis, Home School of Excellence student Joshua Emery, CedarBridge Academy student Trenton Rikkai Scott, and CARE Learning Centre's Oronde Wilson.

"The event will highlight top high school male senior students who aspire to attend college or university," Mr. Pennyman said.

"The aim of the beautillion is to celebrate the talents and academic achievements of our male high school seniors. The beautillion is a male rite of passage ceremony where the youth selected will demonstrate their oratorical ability, talent and community service activities, as they compete for bursaries."

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity. Founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York for black university students, it focuses on giving back and promoting academic excellence within the community.

All participants will receive a monetary bursary award ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, with the winner receiving $5,000. Second place receives $3,000 and third place $2,000. The remaining participants will each earn a $1,000 bursary prize.

"At its core, the beautillion was designed to instil pride, build camaraderie between young men and publicly reward students for their academic work and community service," explained Mr. Pennyman.

Tickets $35, are available at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m. and show starts at 5.30 p.m.
