Realtor faces court awards and auction
owing huge debts.
The Bermuda Supreme Court has made awards totalling $294,556 against Mr.
Thomas and other parties over the last 15 months.
And a public auction of Mr. Thomas' office equipment will be held on Monday at his former business headquarters at the Imperial Hotel Building on Church Street.
Yesterday, Mr. Thomas could not be reached for comment.
Telephone lines to his home in Happy Valley, Pembroke, have been cut off and he was not at home when The Royal Gazette went to see him.
The biggest known debt involving Mr. Thomas is one of $138,224, which he and his company Star Development (Bermuda) Ltd. owes to Mr. Roderick Simons.
Mr. Simons would not go into details about the debt last night but added: "I would like to help Mr. Thomas as much as possible. Everyone's having difficulties right now. Lady Luck hasn't been on his side.'' Mr. Thomas owns just over 50 percent of Star Development, which developed Rockville condominium complex on Serpentine Road, Hamilton.
Most of the other shares were owned by Mr. Arthur E. Rego, with nominal shares also owned by lawyer Mr. Arnold Francis and Mr. Thomas' wife, Cynthia.
Mr. Francis said yesterday he had not had contact with Mr. Thomas for "quite some time''.
"I was granted some shares and was a director but I was not involved in the operation of the company,'' he said.
The second largest debt against Mr. Thomas is one of $100,000, which is ultimately owed to Mrs. Margaret Fleming.
Mrs. Fleming was given a promissory note for that amount by Norman and Kathleen Dowling when they bought her property last year.
The Dowlings, in turn, say they are owed the money by Mr. Thomas.
A lawyer for Appleby, Spurling & Kempe, which is representing the Dowlings, said yesterday: "They are totally innocent parties in all of this.
"Mr. Thomas had money belonging to the Dowlings in much about the same amount which he promised to pay them. He did not pay it to them so they did not pay it to Mrs. Fleming.'' The Dowlings are currently involved in legal action against Mr. Thomas, seeking the full $100,000. The case is expected to be heard at Supreme Court shortly.
Mr. Thomas and his wife also owe $6,332 to their commercial landlord, The Imperial Hotel Co. Ltd.
Other debts include $10,000 to Gilda Corrine Mello-Bean and Gerald Wilburt Bean and $40,000 to Harold Eugene Aitken.
Mr. Stanley Thomas.
