Trojans and Eagles battle to derby stalemate
Som. Trojans 1 Som. Eagles 1Tristan Smith wasted a good opportunity in injury time to seal victory for Somerset Eagles in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday. The striker had the opportunity to be the hero for Eagles in this derby cup tie when a long ball into the Somerset Trojans half saw substitute Shentoine Lambert do the hard work to create the opening for Smith who steered his shot wide of an open goal as goalkeeper Shaquille Jones challenged just inside the box.The miss was a letoff for Trojans who created the better chances in a second half and deserved to be leading late in the game. The second half was more exciting than the first half which saw First Division side Eagles take a deserved lead. The windy conditions probably contributed to the standard of play where, for the first half-hour, Eagles enjoyed more possession, leaving one fan to ask cynically ‘who is the Premier Division team out there?’Eagles, who reached the FA Cup final in 2009-10 when they were last in the Premier Division and lost to penalty kicks to Devonshire Cougars, were certainly not intimidated by their Premier Division opponents and got their just reward for playing positively in the 39th minute when Darin Dowling surged forward into the Somerset box, took a return pass and showed great composure to place his shot into the far bottom corner.A relatively flat first half left plenty of room for improvement after the restart and the home side finally played their part in raising the standard with an equalising goal in the 54th minute when striker Malachi Jones drove home a lot shot following after Trojans had won a corner on the left. Eagles were down to ten men when the goal was scored, with Tristan Smith off the field receiving treatment for a knock to his head. The goal also brought something that was previously missing from the derby — passion — as emotions spilled over among several players after the goal went in. Lyndon Raynor waited for calm to prevail and then booked the two main offenders, Eagles goalkeeper Karl Brown and Trojans player Jahi Simmons. Raynor added six second half bookings to the first half caution of Somerset defender Desmond Burgess as both teams battled for bragging rights in this derby. The home team had two late chances to win the game and on each occasion Eagles had ‘keeper Brown to thank to keeping them in the game. He came off his line in the 82nd and 87th minutes to block shots from Malachi Jones who had been put through by passes through the Eagles defence. In between the two efforts, substitute Johnny Bean also went close for Trojans, but failed to connect properly with his shot when with just the keeper to beat. Then Adolphus Lambert, with a chance to score the winner against his former team, blasted over the top as Somerset kept on the pressure after the momentum had shifted in their favour.Somerset Trojans: S.
