Geordal Albert Smith was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment in July when he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to 47-year-old Cunbanhoe Adolphus Tyrell who lost three teeth and suffered a broken jaw in the August 30, 1996, attack.

Smith told the Court of Appeals: "I have been on remand for a year and a half without consideration. I want to get out in July.'' Court of Appeals president Sir James Astwood explained that Smith would have to take his request for early release to the Treatment of Offenders Board.

Sir James later told the youth: "You are a 19-year-old man and you had better get your act together. You are looking at a life behind bars. Your application is refused. You had better change your attitude.'' Senior Magistrate Will Francis released Smith on $500 bail and set his trial for March 2, 1998.
