Swine flu hits Caribbean Games
Fears over the spread of swine flu have lead to the postponement of the inaugural Caribbean Games.
Organisers were advised to switch the date of the games after an increase of cases in the region.
With a large number of athletes travelling to take part in the games in July, the organisers felt that it would be better to postpone the event.
"Acting on advice from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Health, we have decided that it would be prudent at this stage to postpone the inaugural Caribbean Games in July 2009," said a statement from the organisers.
"The Executive Committee of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees will meet shortly to determine the next course of action."
Local Triathletes Ashley Kirkpatrick, Rachel Rothwell, Carolyn Conway, Reid Robinson and Russ Dyrli managed to escape from the Island prison of Alcatraz recently.
The Bermudian athletes took part in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon after winning their age groups in last year's Escape to Bermuda race. And they set some strong times in the process.
In a race won by Escape to Bermuda winner Andy Potts, Robinson led home the local contingent in a time of two hours and 53 minutes, with Kirkpatrick close behind in 3:19.
Kirkpatrick's time was enough to see her finish third in her age group. The two other women in the group Raothwell (3:48) and Conway (4:02) also posted strong times.
There was less good news for Dyrli however, who seperated his shoulder after falling on one of San Fransico's steep hills during the 18 mile bike section.
