Kidnapping accused refuses to appear in court
A man charged with kidnapping, robbery and grievous bodily harm refused to appear before Chief Justice Richard Ground at the monthly arraignments session yesterday at Supreme Court.
Shouting and swearing, David Jahwell Cox, 24, of Orchard Grove, Pembroke, refused to join his co-accused Antoine Hubert Anderson, 27, of Old Mary?s Lane, St. George?s in court.
?He won?t come out until he sees his lawyer,? a prison officer told Mr. Justice Ground.
The Chief Justice said the prisoner ?does not get to choose? whether or they appear in court. ?We will go ahead without him,? he said, and remanded Cox in custody until his trial on July 4.
Both men deny kidnapping Tarik Williams on August 27, 2004 in order to extort money from him and his family.
Mary Jane Matias, 30, of Ord Road, Warwick, pleaded not guilty to stealing $49,114.05 from Burrows Lightbourn Ltd. where she was employed as a clerk from 2002 to 2004. She also denied two separate charges of fraudulent false accounting.
A 33-year-old, Granaway Heights, Southampton man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty yesterday to an attempted sexual assault on November 11, 2004.
He was also charged with kidnapping and assaulting the woman.
Shaun Frederick Burrows, 24, of Hermitage Road, Smith?s, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Scott Campbell with the intent to rob him with a machete. Burrows also denied trying to steal from Ralf Schlectriemen the same day, November 20, 2004, when he allegedly possessed a machete in a public place.
Mr. Justice Ground extended the bail of all three defendants and ordered them to reappear in court on April 1.
The Wellington Oval trial will not restart until September 19.
Ki-Roy Kinta Butterfield, 27, of Cherry Hill Park, Paget, Jahcai Morris, 24, of Sylvan Dell, Paget, and Tahir Nesta Bascome, 22, of Dunscombe Road, Warwick, denied attempting to murder Tariq Foster at Wellington Oval on April 5, 2004.
The trial was aborted early this year when one of the jurors fell ill.
A co-accused, John Stephen Glasgow, 22, of Spring Hill, Warwick, will be sentenced on February 25 after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.
George (Messy) MacDonald Liburd, 32, of Pembroke, who is accused of killing mother-of-three Chena Danette Trott in August, 2002 was remanded in custody until March 1. After months of legal wrangling, Liburd is still without a lawyer. However, lawyer Elizabeth Christopher said the matter will soon go before the Legal Aid committee.
Four men guilty of causing bodily harm to Dwayne Trott on January 4, 2001, will be sentenced on Friday, February, 25.
During the three-day trial of Antoine Herbert Anderson, 27, of St. Monica?s Road, Pembroke, a jury heard that Mr. Trott had been chopped with a machete, beaten with a two-by-four until it broke, had plastic bags burned over both legs, was beaten by his own brother and had dogs released on his feet.
His co-accused ? Jakai Tyrone Hartford, 22, of Mission Lane, Shaki Allen Jay Minors, 21, of Cherry Hill and John O?Donald Fox, 34, also of Mission Lane ? pleaded guilty to lesser charges on December 6, 2004.
Orlando Lee Burch, 24, of Smith?s Avenue, Warwick, will be sentenced on February 18, for causing the death of 15-year-old Oshea Stowe by impaired driving on June 29 on Ord Road, Warwick.
Another 24 year old, Tariq Shakem White, of Summit View Drive, Hamilton Parish, will be sentenced on the same day for causing the death of 19-year-old Troylisha Samantha Outerbridge by reckless or dangerous driving on March 7, 2003.
Stanley Eugene Ronald Davis, 38, of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody until his sentencing on February 25. Davis pleaded guilty to six counts of burglary from December 2003 to June 2004. The total value of the items he stole was $3,037.
ZBM reporter Michael Sharpe, 48, of Bridle Hill, Smith?s, faces trial on June 6.
Sharpe is charged with causing grievous bodily harm to victim James Woods and being over the legal drink drive limit.
