Fed Cup girls bounce back
keep alive their hopes of finishing second in their pool in America's Group II.
After being upstaged 3-0 by a strong Puerto Rico team in their opening match, Bermuda's team of teenagers came charging back against Jamaica, winning 2-1.
Number two singles player Danielle Paynter beat Tinesta Rowe 6-4, 6-0 and number one singles player Zara DeSilva wrapped up the team's win by stopping Asha Jaja 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
The only blemish for the team came in the doubles where Paynter and Tara Lambert lost in three sets to Rowe and Anya Moystan 6-2, 2-6, 4-6.
"We should have won that match, we had a lot of chances,'' said team captain Kelly Holland.
"We were three-all, four-all and up 40-15 in the deciding set but couldn't pull it out.'' The Bermuda players were nonetheless thrilled with their victory. "We're so happy, we've had wins in the Fed Cup before but it's always been against Antigua and Barbuda so this is the first we've beaten another country. Jamaica are pretty tough,'' said Holland. Like Bermuda, whose players are 15, 16 and two 19-year-olds, Jamaica's players are also all under 19.
Bermuda will be back on the court again today against Guatamala, who lost to Puerto Rico 3-0 yesterday. Another victory for Bermuda would give them second place in the group behind Puerto Rico, but Holland is expecting t oday's opponents to be even tougher than the Jamaicans. "They are a bit better,'' she estimated. "Guatamala beat Jamaica 2-1. This match will probably come down to the doubles.'' If Bermuda finish second they will meet the three other second-place group teams to determine the fifth to eighth places overall. If they finish third they will be contesting the overall places from ninth to 12th.
