A writer will hold a book signing this month to promote the release of three new novels.

Audrey McLean will be at The Bookmart in Brown & Co. on Front Street to sign copies of her new books Dog with a Phone, Miss Underwood 2 and Half-sighted.

The author, best known for her autobiography The Diamond Trap, said that she sold a total of 296 copies since all three books were self-published last December and in January.

She added that Half-sighted, a suspense novel about a woman who was mutilated by her husband, was the most popular of the three so far.

Ms McLean, a representative for a pharmaceutical company, said: “Somebody had called me from overseas all excited and said ‘I could not put the book down. It was engaging and full of suspense’.”

She added: “It was inspired by a man that burnt his wife to the point where one of her eyes was destroyed.

“I didn’t know the details, so I made up a story about the before and after.”

Miss Underwood 2 was written as a sequel to her 2017 book Miss Underwood, which told the story of a teacher who went through culture shock when she moved to a job in a new country.

Ms McLean said that the hero, Miss Underwood, helped one of her pupils understand her culture when he visited her home country.

She explained: “He thought that he knew everything now about the Isle of Gold.

“However, going to visit has made him understand there are still things he didn’t learn.”

Ms McLean, of Devonshire, added that her other book, Dog with a Phone, also touched on cultural differences and that the Ministry of Education had bought 100 copies.

She explained that the story centred around a dog who identified more with humans and drew parallels to racial differences.

Ms McLean, originally from Jamaica, said: “I wanted people to answer the question ‘do you associate yourself with how people treat you, or do you associate with how people look?’”

She added: “The parents will get the satire and I know the children will get the message.

“I was asked to read at one of the primary schools here and they went wild for Dog with a Phone.”

The Book signing will be held on April 13 from 12pm to 3pm. Other books written by Ms McLean will also be available
