Former Progressive Labour Party Senator Walton Brown Jr won Pembroke Central a PLP stronghold with just four votes over newcomer Andrew Simons.Mr Brown, a pollster and former educator, won with 353 and Mr Simons earned 347 votes of the 707 cast.Emerging from the Dellwood Primary polling station smiling, he said he was “relieved but exhausted”, adding: “It was a hard-fought battle. Mr Simons is young but put up a strong battle. I’m very happy with the victory.”Mr Brown quickly left for party headquarters at Alaska Hall two blocks away on Angle Street where the thud of heavily amplified music could be heard.Mr Simons, a reinsurance executive, is the son of former United Bermuda Party minister Gerald Simons.Stunned by the narrow result, he reflected: “I’m obviously disappointed, because I’ve never worked harder at anything in my life, or (worked) at anything with such meaning.“This has been a humbling experience, because people invited me into their homes and allowed me to talk and allowed me to listen ... I’m determined to find a way to continue to serve Bermuda.”In 2007, PLP candidate Wayne Perinchief won with 439 votes to UBP candidate Austin Warner’s 308 and independent Harold Darrell’s 24 votes.Seven ballots were spoiled.
