Almost 100 young people have been honoured for their achievements at the 2015 Outstanding Teen Awards.

Nicholas Pell, deputy head boy at Saltus, took the top prize at the event, held at the weekend.

The teenager was awarded the Outstanding Overall accolade, in addition to the prize for Academic Achievement.

“It felt awesome. Really good,” said Nicholas.

“It’s really nice to have something that you have been working towards since you started school recognised. It’s a really good feeling.

“It was good just to be nominated to begin with. Between all of the schools there were some 90 nominations, and everyone that was nominated was a very successful person.

“I really wanted to win and I thought I had a decent chance, but everyone there was pretty impressive.

“It was one of those things where any one of them could have won and it would have made sense.”

Nicholas said he was looking forward to graduating this year, adding that he was interested in studying mechatronic engineering — a combination of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. A number of other young people were also recognised in a host of categories.

Nearly 100 were honoured by being nominated for a prize, with nearly 20 collecting awards.

Reem Bushara received the female prize for Academic Achievement, while Nalani Dowling and Malachi Hall each took home awards for Leadership.

Destinee Taylor and Evin Mosely won the prizes for Community Service, and Faheemah “Kyrah” Scraders and Daniel Oatley won the Sports category.

Nalani Dowling also won the prize for Visual Arts, as did Asha Bicarie.

Other winners included Alexis Smith and Malik Alick for Performing Arts, Janaya Hall and Andrew Brookes for Spiritual Leadership and Peter Calow and Allison Seymour for Vocational/ Technical Arts. Cocy-Lynne Simmons and Shiloh Robinson were recognised in the Perseverance category and Denaw Jones and Sareiko Thomas for Most Progress. Shadow Youth, Sport, Community and Culture Minister Michael Weeks congratulated all of the award recipients, saying: “It is through recognising the accomplishments of our youth, encouraging them in their positive endeavours and supporting them that we shape a better future for our country.

“Most of our young people are doing well, are striving to succeed and are going to be tremendous assets to Bermuda, not just today, but in all the years to come.

“Our Outstanding Teen Awards recipients represent just a fraction of our youth and the greatness within them. Let us continue to recognise, encourage and support the youth of Bermuda.”
