The town of St George will get into the festive spirit tonight as the Bermuda National Trust hosts its 40th annual Christmas Walkabout.The popular holiday event draws crowds to the East End to visit historic homes and enjoy a range of entertainment and activities.A spokesman for the National Trust said: “Once again musicians, dancers and carol singers will entertain the crowds and refreshments will be available throughout the Olde Towne and marked on a map that will be distributed on the evening. “Many of the oldest continually occupied buildings in the New World will be decorated and candlelit for the event. “Old Rectory, Bridge House, Stewart Hall, Buckingham, Tucker House, Reeve Court and the Globe Hotel will be festively decorated with each offering its own yesteryear experience.“Children can meet Santa at the National Trust's members area at the Globe Hotel.”[naviga:iframe src=https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ftheroyalgazette%2Fvideos%2F373702340050563%2F&show_text=0&width=630 width=100% height=385 style=border:none;overflow:hidden scrolling=no frameborder=0 allowTransparency=true allowFullScreen=true][/naviga:iframe]Kate's House on Silk Alley — a private home — has been added to the list of open houses, and, for the second year in a row, Smith's Garden on Barber's Alley will be open. Shops, churches and museums in the town will stay open late for the event and the Bridge House Gallery, operated by artist and designer Peter Matcham, will celebrate its opening. This year, the National Trust's members' area will be on the ground floor of the National Trust Museum at the Globe Hotel.Non-members can join the Trust for half price on the night as a special offer. Michael Neff, managing director of Butterfield Bank, which has sponsored the event for more than a decade, said: “As a company, Butterfield started in St George's more than 200 years ago and we've had a banking hall in the Olde Towne for more than 75 years, so supporting the Bermuda National Trust's Annual Walkabout is a natural fit for us.“We encourage everyone to visit our historic banking centre and enjoy mulled wine, chocolate truffles and popcorn.”King's Square will host performances by groups including the Bermuda Dance Academy, the In Motion School of Dance, the Bermuda Island Pipe Band Dancers and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Band between 6pm and 9pm.A spokesman said tickets for a special shuttle to the town from Marginal Wharf in St David's were still available.The first ferry will leave Marginal Wharf at 6.45pm and the last return ferry will leave at 8.45pm. Tickets are $2 for all ages and a maximum of 350 tickets will be sold on www.bnt.bm.
