Defending Miller High Life League champions Marlboro wasted no time announcing their intentions for the season as they defeated New Mix Ups during first

Marlboro ran away 27-3 victors over the hapless challengers with Mike McCallum's 611 series leading the charge, aiding his team to a 983 game and 2,841 series, both tops on the night.

Last year's runners-up Tool and Equipment were not nearly so fortunate as the were shocked by a 21-9 thumping courtesy of Team Metro.

Clyde Burgess posted the night's best game and series -- 245 and 672 -- in shepherding his side to the surprise win.

Play in the Fishbowl League continued this week with Dolphins, Wahoo, Piranhas, Snappers, Barracuda and Hinds each emerging victorious.

Dolphins ruled the waves in their encounter with Marlins, capturing a 3-1 win led by Marilyn Simmons' 521 series.

David Mello sparked Wahoo to a 3-1 triumph over Angel Fish, turning in a 568 series.

Similarly, Piranhas topped Tuna 3-1 led by Reggie Horseman's 529 series.

Snappers were also 3-1 winners in their contest with Rockfish as Ann Mitchell posted a women's best 528 series.

Barracuda rounded out the list of 3-1 conquests by beating Goldfish.

CRICKET CRI Police retained the Carib Shield when they beat the West Indian Association by 31 runs in their fifth annual match at the Police Field on Sunday.

Police recovered to post 162 in 39.2 overs, after being 40-4 at one stage before Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock and Terry Thomas pulled them back into a strong position.

Leverock won the man of the match award with a knock of 57, before helping Police wrap up the victory with three for 31 from eight overs. Supporting Leverock in the batting was Thomas with 44, Roger Blades with 22 and George Jackson with 19.

The West Indian Association bowling was led by the Clarke brothers, Olwin with four for 41 and captain Elvon with three for 24. Jerry Callender took two for 18.

WIA could only manage 131 in 32.1 overs, despite a positive opening stand of 75 between Callender (41) and Barry Richards (43). Number seven batsman Sean Spencer was the only other player in double figures with 15 as Police took control once the openers were removed.

SAILING SLG The aborted sail-off between Port Royal II and Elizabeth II in dinghy racing is set to resume this evening in Hamilton Harbour with the third and final race being contested.

Each will be seeking victory which would result in qualification to represent the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club against St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club offering Victory IV in the prestigious Jubilee Cup on Sunday.

Sunday will be the final set of races including the Victory Cup, Leon D. Fox Trophy and the Jubilee Cup.

SWIMMING SW The Trunk Island Swim will be held on Sunday at 2.00 p.m.

The event has been postponed on two previous occasions because of bad weather.

Swimmers competing are asked to begin arriving at Palmetto Bay Hotel at 12 noon for transportation to Trunk Island. The last boat leaves at 1.30.
