Maxwell hammers Pembroke united
Sunday in the Commercial Cricket League's new League Cup 40 overs competition in which bowlers are limited to five overs each.
Stars romped home by six wickets against nine-man Pembroke United in a Group A game at Garrison Field while in Group B Sandys Sports Club powered their way to a five-wicket victory over North Village at the Royal Naval Field.
Ian Coke provided the backbone of Pembroke's 128 with an innings of 57, which contained one six and nine fours, but Stars made light of their target, sweeping home in only 21 overs.
Maxwell Smith led the way with 11 fours in an unbeaten 63. Worrell Bean hit 20 to follow up his three for 12 in 4.5 overs.
Dropped catches and injuries cost North Village dearly.
Michael Corday, dropped before he had scored, was the architect of Sandys' victory, cracking two sixes and 11 fours in his 90 as the West Enders overhauled Village's challenging 233 with more than fours overs to spare, despite losing openers Leon Dickinson and Andrew Paynter with only 12 runs on the board.
Terry Ward chipped in with 38 and skipper Terry Corday sealed the victory with seven fours in an unbeaten 49. Village did not help their cause by giving up 27 extras, including 18 wides.
Openers David Scraders and Mike Levon (26) gave Village a flying start with a partnership of 81. Scraders went on to reach 79, hitting three sixes and nine fours. Other useful contributions came from Elliott Jennings and Haile Melakot, with 23 apiece, and Dion Ball who made 22.
Village's Clarence Burrows is expected to miss the rest of the season. He snapped a tendon in his right leg while taking a fine one-handed catch at midwicket to dismiss Paynter and had an operation in hospital on Monday.
Alan Roberts also needed a visit to hospital where he had five stitches for a split hand after dropping a catch.
The competition continues on Sunday with Pembroke meeting West Indian Association and Village taking on Forties.
