Former players from Somerset, St. George's get `Star' treatment
A veterans All-Star Game, featuring past players from Somerset and St.
George's in what is hoped will become an annual event, will be launched on Saturday at Garrison Field starting at 3.15.
Top players of the past from the Trojans, Wellington Rovers and St. George's Colts will turn out for the match, after which presentations and tributes will be made to Gladstone Burchall of Somerset and Peter Williams, Sr. of Wellington Rovers for their contributions to the game.
Burchall, who played for the West End Rovers, was coach of the Rovers team which won the FA Cup in 1957-58. Williams, meanwhile, served for more than 35 years as treasurer of Rovers. The presentation to the pair will be made at RAA following the game.
All proceeds from the match will aid the junior programmes at both Somerset and St. George's.
Already confirmed as participants for the Over-40s match are the likes of Clyde (Tango) Burgess, Rudy Minors, Randy Horton, Richard Simmons, Rudy Smith, Roger Hunt, Larry Hunt and Richard (Dirt) Simmons. St. George's will have Neil Paynter, Sr, Noel (Sub) Smith, Bubba Tucker, Bayfield Clarke, Gary Darrell, Charlie Fox, Randy Richardson, Milton Jones, Ashton Rayner, David Brangman and Dennis Wainwright.
"We're renewing the rivalry which goes back to Cup Match,'' said Brangman, who is one of the organisers of the match. "It's a way of getting back together. It'll be nice to pay tribute to guys like Peter Williams and Gladstone Burchall for what they've done for football and never got recognition for.
"The idea is to make it an annual match and every year to honour another individual.'' A cup has been donated by Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Smith.
Tonight's Commercial Cup finals, which were scheduled for PHC Stadium, have been postponed because that ground is committed to Bingo on Wednesday nights.
No new date has been set for the matches which will see Lobster Pot taking on St. George's All-Stars in group B and Island Rangers playing BAA Wanderers in group A.
A venue is also being sought for the Shield semi-final replay between Somerset Eagles and Prospect which did not go into penalty kicks after a 3-3 extra time deadlock as called for in the regulations.
The Shield final will be played on April 2 between Southampton Rangers and either Eagles or Prospect.
The Second Division match between Prospect and promotion chasing Social Club, which was postponed on February 26, will take place tomorrow night at PHC Stadium at 8.00.
Social Club need to win that match and their final encounter against Wolves on Sunday to clinch the second promotion spot ahead of Eagles who have completed their season.
Closure of a couple of grounds since they are being prepared for the upcoming cricket season has forced the BFA to switch Second Division matches on Sunday.
Hamilton Parish will close out their season against Paget at Frog Lane Field instead of Wellington Oval which is closed for repairs. Devonshire Rec. is also closed.
As a result the match between Wolves and Social Club has been switched to PHC Stadium at 1 p.m.
The Alliance and Commercial Division knockout finals will take place on April 1 at Bernard Park. Devonshire Colts will meet PHC in the Alliance final at 1.00 and North Village Rams will play Robin Hood in the Commercial final at 3.00.
