Ending dry spell a relief, says Wells
Nahki Wells admits his lack of goals was “starting to get to me” and hopes his first goal for Queens Park Rangers will be the start of a prolific streak.
The Bermuda striker finally got off the mark during QPR’s 3-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.
Wells came on as a second-half substitute and struck in the 83rd minute to end his goalless run stretching back to April 2017 when he was still a Huddersfield Town player.
The 28-year-old entered the fray with the home side leading two-nil and put an exclamation mark on the convincing win with a powerful left-footed finish to end his 29-game drought.
“It’s a great feeling,” Wells told the QPR website. “Of course, it’s been something that over the last few weeks has started to get to me a bit — you know, knowing that I need to score goals.
“I’ve been pulled out of the side in the last game or two and I can’t deny how important that goal is for me, for the team and for us going forward. Hopefully it’s the start of what I’d like to think will be a run of goals.”
Wells scored in his tenth appearance for QPR since joining the West London club on loan from Premier League side Burnley in August.
“It’s been great,” he said. “The players, the management, the fans understand what I have to offer and what my contribution has been so far. They would’ve probably thought it would have been more goals. But I’ve contributed in many other ways so it’s important that I get the goals and hopefully everything comes together collectively.
“For most of my appearances my performances have been very good — a few games under par but that’s football — my job’s to come in, score goals and help the team win and as long as I do that I’m happy.”
Wells says he has the firm backing of Steve McClaren, the QPR manager, who helped to boost his confidence.
“Since I walked in, he’s given me huge confidence,” he said. “He’s backed me and believed in me and, like I said recently, it’s time for me to repay him in goals.”
McClaren was delighted to see Wells rediscover his scoring touch.
“It was important Nahki got off the mark, so that was very satisfying.” he said.
Wells is hoping for recall to the starting line-up when QPR face Aston Villa at home tonight.
