What a wonderful welcome after 42 years

Overlooked beauty: Spittal Pond Nature Reserve (File photograph by Mark Tatem)

Dear Sir,

Returning to our beloved Bermuda after 42 years. We want to thank the people of Bermuda for the best holiday ever!

A few minutes before we landed, I was taking photos out of the window. I guess the stewardess saw how excited I was and asked me: “Are you going home?”

I said: “Yes, we are going home!”

I had been vacationing on the island since 1968 and moved to Bermuda in 1972. I met my husband on a blind date via friends. He was working at the Bermudiana Hotel.

We married in 1974 and moved to Miami. We did take a vacation to Bermuda the next year, but we haven’t been back since.

It was such a treat to visit all our favourite pubs, restaurants, beaches and special spots — Spanish Point and Spittal Pond. Some things had changed, such as more traffic on the roads and more shops on Front Street, but what a treat to have a full-size supermarket with top-quality food items.

We want to extend a special thank-you to the three ladies we met at the Paraquet restaurant, who picked up our tab — we will never forget your kind words. And to the local we met in the car park of the Robin Hood and watched a soccer game together.

To the lovely hosts, Sally and Scott of the Avocado Cottage in Paget, who treated us like family and to their cat, Max, who spent every evening on my lap watching TV.

To the two kind taxi drivers who came to our rescue when our scooter tipped over in the parking lot of Horseshoe Bay Beach.

To the lovely lady driver who took us to the airport on April 30.

From the minute we landed, to the day we left, it was pure joy and love. It was almost like everyone knew we had arrived and opened their arms to welcome us home.

After all these years, something has changed on the island but the grace, kindness and character of the Bermudian people will stay in our hearts for ever.

Thank you. See you next year.
