Delray Rawlins and his Sussex team-mates got off to the perfect start in their Bob Willis Trophy south group opener after securing a 94 run triumph over Hampshire at The 1st Central County Ground, in Hove yesterday.Set a victory target of 245, Hampshire were dismissed shortly after tea for 150 with Rawlins among the wicket takers. The Bermudian all-rounder claimed the scalp of James Fuller with his slow left-arm deliveries to help the hosts edge closer to victory, which was clinched on the penultimate day of the four-day match.Earlier, Rawlins made a promising start in Sussex’s second innings but was unable to build on early momentum. Batting at No 7, he struck a six and a four in a knock of 13 from 12 deliveries before being caught behind off of seamer Keith Barker, the godson of former West Indies captain Sir Clive Lloyd.Rawlins was dismissed for a 13-ball duck and was not called upon to bowl during the first innings of the match.Sussex’s impressive win owed much to opening batsman Phil Salt and new ball bowler Ollie Robinson.Salt stroked half centuries (68 and 80) in both innings while Robinson took eight wickets in the match, including an impressive five for 29 in the second innings to seal the hosts win with a day to spare.“I’m delighted. I thought we played better cricket throughout and we had some really good individual performances,” Ben Brown, the Sussex captain, said.“Ollie Robinson’s performance is the sort we have come to expect from him. He is in a really good rhythm and that spell of three wickets before lunch today made such a difference. “Phil Salt batted really well in both innings too. He was in good form for England with that hundred in the warm-up game against Ireland. He’s an attacking player but I don’t think people realise what a good defensive technique he has, which you need to have if you are opening the batting in England.”The Bob Willis Trophy has replaced the County Championship, which is set to return next summer, as a result of the shortened 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.The competition features all 18 first-class counties that are aiming to reach next month’s five-day trophy decider.Counties have been divided into three regionalised groups of six and will play five group-stage matches, with the two group winners with the most points from the three regionalised groups progressing to the final.
