Todd's full of praise for Colts
St. George's Colts coach Richard Todd has heaped praise on his side following their 4-3 FA Cup loss to Devonshire Cougars.Colts came from behind three times on Tuesday night courtesy of Jahron Dickinson but fell just short of taking the game to penalties as Tumani Steede's late strike denied them at the death.Todd was pleased with the effort put forth by his team, and said that rather than focussing on the disappointment of being knocked out, he'd like his side to use their performance as the benchmark for the rest of the season.“It is always hard going out how we did, I would have liked to see the game go all the way to kicks from the spot, but I am extremely pleased and proud with the performance of the team and the never say die attitude,” said Todd.“Obviously it speaks volumes for the team and it sets a benchmark for the programme.“It is always difficult for the players and it is disappointing regardless of how well they played, but if they can use this as a platform moving forward then I would be pleased and they won nothing but respect.”For Todd, the turning point in the game came two minutes from the end of normal time when, having made all his substitutes, Chae Simmons was sent off for two bookable offences.“We know that Cougars are an offensive minded team and we have weapons as well and the difference was the playing surface, you could see that on a good field it allows the finishers to do their job and it was exciting to see,” said Todd.“The game changing moment for me was when Chae (Simmons) got sent off and having used all our subs already and it proved to be too much.“Cougars had the extra player and the presence to play the ball around the pitch and to help that advantage show up.“My guys played off natural adrenaline towards the end and we showed our ability to absorb pressure and push back in the other direction so I'm pleased.“I feel we haven't peaked yet and the best is still to come from us, not only this season but also going forward.”Colts won't have much time to reflect on the past three days with a trip to league leaders North Village this weekend, where weary legs can surely become a problem for the side.“Playing Village this weekend won't be easy but we have to let the result from last night go, but it is a league encounter and we have to turn our focus to the next match,” said Todd.“The only concern would be playing three games in seven days but we will give the players some rest before the weekend.”A date that St. George's will have circled on their calendar will be their Friendship semi-final clash with Cougars, on Wednesday, March 9, a match where the Colts will surely be looking to exact some measure of revenge. Not to be drawn into the psychological aspects of the recent defeat, Todd made it clear that each game is different and warrants its own thoughts.“We play Cougars one more time in the Friendship and we know that game will be important again, but each game is different and we have to approach it as it comes,” he said.“We have to look at our personnel before the match, and each game we have had to play a different combination of players so sometimes you go in with a plan and the rest is a lot to do with in game play and how it is going at that moment.”The boss also went as far as hailing his two attacking threats, Dickinson and Clay Darrell, and believes the two deserve a chance to be put in the national team fold for their outstanding performances this season.“I want to make special mention of Jahron, all three of his finishes were quality and between himself and Clay Darrell are starting to show their ability in this division and hopefully people are looking at them for the national level,” said Todd.
