Chris Douglas has announced his shock retirement from international cricket.

The 21-year-old Willow Cuts batsman informed head coach David Moore of his surprising decision late on Friday night.

There have been signs of a personality clash between Douglas and Moore in the past, and it is believed that the Australian's no-nonsense approach to the game was at the heart of a disagreement which caused Douglas to make his deicision to quit.

This time the player apparently took issue with some of the fitness exercises he was being asked to do at winter training and reportedly told other members of the squad that 'he wasn't feeling it'.

It isn't the first time that the talented batsman has clashed with Moore over his attitude recently, and only last week there was a discussion over his 'disappointing' bleep test results.

Douglas though has a history of taking a rather lazy approach to his fitness work, and training in general, and was dropped for an Intercontinental Shield match against Uganda last year by former coach Gus Logie after he missed three consecutive training sessions in the run-up to the game.

In the summer, he was left out of Bermuda's ICC Americas squad with a knee injury, only to turn around three days later and play for Cuts against Bailey's Bay in a game that also saw Malachi Jones play against Moore's wishes.

The infuritating thing about Douglas' decision is that he has shown the –potential to become one of the Island's best batsmen. His average for Bermuda is in the 60s, which included –53 against a strong West Indies in King City two years ago.

His runs against the West Indies came in the Scotiabank Series, where he also scored 69 against Canada, but that was the last time he played for his country.

After that Logie gave up on him following his poor training attendance, and while Moore was willing to give him another go, this latest incident means that he wouldn't get back into the squad even if he wanted to do so.

With a tour to Dubai coming up at the end of the month, and the vitally important World Cricket League Division Two qualifiers next April, Bermuda can ill-afford to lose a player of Douglas' ability.

Douglas too has blown an ideal opportunity to put himself in the shop window in Dubai, his ability is such that he could play first class cricket in England if his attitude wasn't so bad.
