Full houses at cinema for Star Wars movie

Audience draw: the latest Star Wars film, The last Jedi, has been selling out showings at Specialty Cinema

The latest Star Wars film, The Last Jedi has resulted in a week of sell-out showings at the Speciality Cinema.

And all indications pointed to that success continuing during the Christmas holiday weekend.

“We had a good response, every movie has been sold-out. This is the third time in a row Disney has allowed us to showcase Star Wars and we are blessed,” said Giovanna Easton, co-owner of the cinema, at the end of last week.

The cinema has also been selling a selection of Star Wars merchandise.

The sell-out shows mirror the success of the previous two Star Wars films that were shown at Speciality Cinema, The Force Awakens in 2015, and last year’s Rogue One.

The Last Jedi will be playing at the cinema, on Church Street, until January 11.

The latest Star Wars movie has drawn critical acclaim from film reviewers, but has had a mixed response from some audiences. The Rotten Tomatoes film website shows the movie with a 92 per cent positive rating from film critics, but only 52 per cent of viewers who posted a score on the website liked the film. However, users of the IMDb website have given the film 7.6 out of 10.

The Last Jedi has earned almost $800 million at the global box office since its release on December 15.
