Policeman charged with GBH

Thirteen officers came to Magistrates? Court in a show of support for another officer who was charged with grievous bodily harm.

Pol Con. Glynn Archibald Kellman, 38, of Slippery Hill, St. George?s plead not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Eversley Julian Zuill. The alleged incident took place in an increased penalty zone in Hamilton on February 24.

Kellman was not in uniform when he appeared before the court, he was the first person to be dealt with at yesterday?s Magistrates? Court session. After he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail he left along with the other officers who were present in the courtroom.

A Police media spokesman was not aware if the alleged incident happened while the officer was on duty or not.

Kellman will return for trial on July 18 at Magistrates? Court.

Mugger loses handbag to owner

A woman chased a mugger and snatched back her handbag after he took it from her on Gorham Road, Pembroke on Monday morning.

The woman told Police she was walking to her car when she observed a man lurking. While she was on her cell phone, the suspect approached and asked for a cigarette.

The woman denied his request but the suspect grabbed her handbag and ran. The victim gave chase, caught the suspect and after a struggle managed to get her handbag back. The suspect fled empty-handed.

He is described as a black male, approximately five foot, nine inches tall, weighing 190 pounds and is believed to be 35 to 40 years old. He was also wearing dark clothing, glasses and had a hood pulled over his head.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

New link to business for students

Students are to get help from mentors within the business sector, under a new Government scheme.

Michael Scott, Minister of Telecommunications and E-Commerce, announced the launch of the pilot programme e-Net on Tuesday.

It will give information technology students at Bermuda College the chance to be matched with mentors from the business community. The pairs will communicate online about class-related issues and challenges on a secure website during the four-week pilot scheme. If successful, the programme is expected to be launched permanently in September.

The programme is a joint initiative from the Department of E-Commerce, YouthNet and Bermuda College.

Driving under influence of cocaine

A man accused of driving under the influence of cocaine has had his case adjourned in Magistrates? Court on Monday.

Brandon Eugene Rogers, 52, denied driving at Stowe Hill, Paget, with cocaine in his body on August 27, last year. He also pleaded not guilty to possession of a homemade crack pipe on the same date.

The defendant, of King Street, Hamilton was granted bail and the case was put off until July 3.

Burglars make away with tools

A burglar stole several items of jewellery from a Ewing Street, Pembroke home on Tuesday. Police are also dealing with a burglary at a Longford Road, Warwick where $40 was taken from a guest property. The spate of tool theft continues with cash, a Makita polisher, two four-inch grinders and three random orbit sanders taken overnight Monday from a Harbour Road, Paget premises.

Fresh TV still off the air

Fresh TV has been knocked off the air for weeks by a utility pole accident on Court Street.

Electricity cables crashed to the ground in February after reports a truck driver pulled out of a parking space and, unaware his vehicle was attached to a Belco power pole, continued to pull away.reported at the time that a woman was electrocuted as the pole snapped and sent sparks flying.

But another casualty of the freak accident was Fresh TV, based on Court Street, which uses the Government?s cable channel three.

Station chief Elmore Warren yesterday said the station suffered some ?serious damage? during the outage.

It is now waiting for replacement server equipment, which helps the channel run automatically, to be shipped in before it can get back on air. Engineers will have to rewire and effectively restructure the studio, he added.

He said the aim is for Fresh to be back on air on May 24.

Driving ban for speeder

A speedy motorist who clocked 73kph on South Road has been hit with a driving ban. Steven Simons appeared in Magistrates? Court yesterday and admitted speeding in Paget on August 16, last year. Simons, 24, of St. Michael?s Road, Paget, asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner not to ban him because he needed his car to get to work every day.

But Mr. Warner handed the defendant a one-year car ban and a $350 fine.

In a separate speeding case, a motorist admitted breaking the speed limit ? even though he could not remember the offence he was charged with. Andrew Outerbridge, of Tranquillity Hill, Sandys, hit 62kph on Middle Road, Southampton, on June 21, last year, a court heard. But the defendant said: ?I have no memory of the incident but I?m going to plead guilty to save everyone a lot of time.?

Outerbridge, 51, was fined $230 yesterday.

$1,000 helmet stolen

A burglar fled with a crash helmet worth more than $1,000 after terrorising a member of the US Coast Guard who was visiting the Island.

The 31-year-old American was lying in his bed at Clear View guest house, Hamilton Parish late on Monday morning when he heard a knock at the door.

When he opened the door, a man asked for directions to Swizzle Inn. The American visitor became suspicious, closed and locked all doors and went back to bed.

However, a short time later he heard noises at a window near the bedroom before a metal chair shattered it.

The suspect then entered and stole the complainant?s army green camouflage bag containing his Coast Guard helmet and gloves; a wallet containing $10 in cash and personal items; and a dark green and black knapsack containing a black electronic organiser in a Velcro case.

The suspect is described as a light brown skinned male with curly hair, approximately five foot, four inches tall, wearing a brown shirt and denim pants.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George?s Criminal Investigation Unit on 297-1122 or the main Police number on 295-0011.
