Bromby poised for top three in fourth Games

Peter Bromby is getting a lot of Press in the international sailing community ? and it?s no surprise.

A veteran of three Olympics, the Bermudian is among those favoured for honours in the Star Class and, with some of his rivals already feeling the pressure, he is happy to ?have been there and done that? before.

Recently back from the Greek national sailing championships, where he finished a creditable fifth among a stellar fleet, Bromby has decided to lie low until he heads back to Athens in search of a medal.

?I noticed people are starting to tighten up a month from the Games. Their mental state is getting tight. So I think from a mental point of view it?s better to stay away rather than put more and more pressure on yourself,? said the Island?s top skipper who also observed some competitors? preoccupation with wind patterns.

?We?re more confident than we have ever been at a Games. The reality is that we?re among the teams that have a chance (of medalling) and high up in the order. The international Press is interviewing us and they regard us as genuine medal contenders but it?s sailing and there?s an element of luck. We hope we catch the right breaks at the right time.?

He is also optimistic that his meticulous attention to detail and planning will pay off; decisions such as attending the Greek championships because the trip would be invaluable even if he and crew Lee White didn?t excel.

As fate would have it, they did well on the water ? leading the regatta two-thirds of the way and even half-way into the final race ? but perhaps the more important strides were made outside the boat.

?We had been asking lots of questions and nobody could tell us anything about logistics and when we got over there we could see why. There?s so much unfinished stuff and so many unanswered questions at this point which leads me to believe me that the Games are not going to be as they originally planned.

?There will probably be compromised positions on just about everything.?

Describing the area where Olympic sailing is to be held as ?very much in turmoil? and ?still one big construction site?, Bromby disclosed they had to make a crucial decision about accommodation once they assessed the mess.

?The rail system was to run right into the sailing venue from the Athletes Village but that?s not going to be happening now.

?That makes an apartment a necessity whereas we had hoped to stay in the Village. But we had to get an apartment because we couldn?t guarantee what?s going to happen with the traffic and getting to and from the event,? he explained.

Bolstered by the knowledge that he conquered the best of his peers in the final two major regattas ? Spa and Kiel ? before the Olympics, Bromby will remain at home until August 9 when he heads to the home of mythology, praying the gods will be on his side.

Come August 21 ? when his Games really begin ? his desire will be to erase the painful memories of Sydney 2000 when he claimed the most agonising spot in sporting circles ? fourth place: so close but yet so frustratingly far.

?We made believers out of a lot of people and now there?s so many people here who just can?t wait for it to start,? said the 39-year-old candidly.

?Everyone knew how hurt we were and we?ve been driven by that fourth place ever since.?
