'Smokeasy' bid

A number of bars are asking to be designated as smoking bars in anticipation of the smoking ban which will come into effect in April.

In December the Senate passed a blanket ban on smoking in enclosed public places, as well as outlawing cigarette vending machines and the selling of any tobacco products to youngsters below the age of 18.

Health Minister Patrice Minors said the law was essential because statistics and research pointed to tobacco use being the second biggest killer of people in the world.

This week VSB reported that a number of bars are looking to be designated as special smoking bars, which would not have to follow the smoking ban laws.

Ms Minors said last night that she had yet to receive a formal letter from any bars requesting to be re-designated.

She also said that she would look at their proposal and consider it but currently she was "not inclined" to allow any public places be re-designated.
