Moore: Hard work has only just begun for Dubai chosen few
If the 15 cricketers selected for next month's tour to Dubai thought they had done the hard part by making the squad then they are in for a shock. The tour will see them play five games in seven days against United Arab Emirates, and if any of the players harbour hopes of making the return trip to the Middle East in April, then they will need to work even harder now they are in the side.Even then, there is no guarantee that will be enough, and with competition for places at an all time high since head coach David Moore took over, the announcement of yesterday's squad threw up a couple of surprise names.Of them all, Kamau Leverock's was probably the biggest surprise, especially given that he hadn't originally been chosen to make the trip. The PHC youngster was drafted in yesterday morning when Terryn Fray dropped out at the last minute.Fray made the decision to withdraw because his grandfather is ill and it might end up costing him dearly. The Bailey's Bay batsman is only believed to have been handed an opportunity to play because Irving Romaine is injured, and he might not get another one.“Everyone knows what they have to do to make the side, everyone knows that we aren't taking fitness as a joke, and we're not taking commitment as a joke,” said Moore.“Going away to play cricket for Bermuda isn't all about getting on the plane, that's the easy part, the hardest part is to perform consistently so you can maintain your position (in the team).”With a batting line-up that includes the likes of Jason Anderson, Dion Stovell, Fiqre Crockwell and Chris Foggo, the top order could easily be made up of opening batsmen. Fitting in, as well as being fit, will be essential.“Some (batsmen) will play non-traditional roles, or roles they are not used to,” said Moore. “Effectively we've nearly got a team of opening batsmen, so there will be plenty of guys batting out of position, and they've got to realise that while they've made the team, they've not got to fit themselves into a role.“My theory is that you try and pick the best six or seven batsmen in the country, and then you fit them into a batting order that works well for the team.”Fitness, or lack of, played an important role in the selection of the squad for January's matches, and Moore has shown once again that reputation, and runs or wickets, will carry a player only so far. That's reflected in the make-up of the bowling attack where Damali Bell and Kyle Hodsoll have been prefered to Kevin Tucker and Justin Pitcher. And while the pair have been rewarded for their hard work in training, they have also been picked with an eye on their ability to play day in and day out, something that will be required in January, and at the Division Two qualifiers in April.“You get a young boy like Damali Bell in the side, who bowls left arm, who swings it, has an excellent level of fitness, and is an excellent athlete and that's a good make-up for the sort of cricketers we are trying to develop,” said Moore.“What we've got to do is get bowlers who can bowl ten overs in a day, in heat, and come back after one bowling spell, but also get back up the next day. And play consistently well the next day, we can't afford to be carrying anyone who hasn't got the ability to do that.“I've spoken to all the bowlers, those guys that are in the squad and those guys that missed out, and they clearly know what's needed to play at this level. It's been made crystal clear to them what we are requiring, and it's now up to them to take those words on board, and work hard if they want to get back into the team.”Moore has certainly made it clear to his players that the door remains open to all of them ahead of the qualifiers in April, although with Bermuda only allowed a 14-man squad for that tournament, the competition is only going to intensify between now and then.“The door's not closed for anyone,” said Moore, “but you can only pick 14 for the next tour, and I don't think anyone in this squad could be under any illusions as to what's required to make that final 14.”Bermuda Squad: D Hemp, J Anderson, D Bell, D Borden, L Cann, F Crockwell, J Desilva, C Foggo, K Hodsoll, K Leverock, S Kelly, M Jones, D Stovell, R Trott, J West.
