Hornets humbled by convincing Rough Riders
Dandy Town 0Rough Riders 4Defending Premier Division champions Dandy Town crashed to a humbling defeat against Long Island Rough Riders at BAA Field. That Rough Riders failed to win by a far greater margin was the only real positive Hornets could take from their insipid performance in front of a sparse crowd last night. For had it not been for the woodwork, and the goalkeeping heroics of Daniel Johnson, then the touring team could have realistically won by double digits.Dandy Town coach Jomar Wilkinson would have understandably had one eye on his team’s FA Cup replay against North Village next week and decided to rest experienced campaigners like Raymond Beach, Lashun Dill and Heys Wolfe.Even so, considering Hornets are in the midst of their domestic season the ease in which they were dismantled was concerning, especially when you consider that Rough Riders have not played a competitive match since July when they finished fourth in the Northeast Division of Premier Development League.Rough Riders coach Paul Roderick, a former Everton trainee, admitted the level of dominance his team exerted over Dandy Town had surprised him.“It was a very pleasing performance by us,” said Roderick, “we wore them down basically and it could have been a bigger scoreline.“I was surprised by the fitness levels of our players because we’re in our off-season and we’re using this trip as a pre-season.“To be honest we should have killed the game off at half-time, their keeper had a great game.”Roderick missed the Rough Riders’ 2-1 win over the Bermuda Under-20s in St. George’s on Monday as he had been delayed at the airport because of snow and freezing temperatures. His team, like the Under-20s, struggled to adapt to the blustery conditions at the Wellington Oval but looked a far better side on the more forgiving artificial surface at BAA Field last night.“People are saying it’s cold (in Bermuda) but I think it’s just nice. I missed the first game as I was stuck in New York because of the weather and I hear the conditions during our first game were very difficult, so we were pleased the get the win,” said Roderick.“The trip’s been great so far and we are elated to have won both matches. Hopefully we can make it three wins out of three on New Year’s Day.”Rough Riders opened the scoring last night as early as the second minute when Dominick Sarle dispossessed Hornets defender George Dyer before firing past Johnson. At the other end, Hornets had a guilt edge to equalise minutes later when Saki Tuzo found himself bearing down on goal but failed to direct his weak shot past the Rough Riders ‘keeper. Tuzo was later stretchered off and taken to hospital with a leg injury. The visitors were enjoying the superior swathes of possession with Dandy Town resembling a younger brother chasing after an older sibling’s ball for much of the remainder of the first half,.And they could have easily gone into the break further behind with Keith Detelj and Sarle both hitting the crossbar for Rough Riders. After the interval Rough Riders continued to dominate and extended their lead through substitute Shane Arikian who curled a shot past Johnson from the edge of the box.Arikian then grabbed his second from close range following some good work down the left-wing by Matthew Uy.Uy, the winner of team’s tryout competition “Are U the 1” prior to their trip, then cannoned in a shot off the underside of crossbar to complete the rout late on.Rough Riders take on the Bermuda Under-20s at Somerset Cricket Club on New Year’s Day at 2. 30pm.Dandy Town: D.
