A 35-year-old sailor seriously injured after his tanker was hit by a wave has been brought to Bermuda for urgent medical treatment. The chief officer of the Aegean Angel whose captain and chief engineer were killed when the wave struck 800 miles northeast of Bermuda on Thursday was airlifted to the Island yesterday morning and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He and his two colleagues were on the deck of the Greek-owned tanker, heading to Houston, Texas with a cargo of fuel oil, when it was hit.Police said all three men were violently thrown; the 47-year-old captain and 33-year-old chief mechanic were killed.Yesterday’s airlift was carried out by a US Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter, which took off from LF Wade International Airport at 8.30am, when the tanker was about 150 miles east-northeast of Bermuda.A statement from Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said a replacement captain and chief engineer were taken to the ship, while the injured chief officer was winched to safety and brought ashore to a waiting ambulance.“Now that the ship has a new captain and chief engineer in place, the decision has been made to bypass Bermuda and proceed to Freeport in the Bahamas,” said the statement.“That decision was based on forecast weather conditions that would have hampered the continuation of the mission to land the deceased captain and chief engineer at Bermuda during the hours of darkness tonight.”
