Huddersfield close in on new striker

Top target: Montpellier striker Mounie could be heading to Huddersfield

Huddersfield Town are set to break their transfer record to sign a striker from French club Montpellier to provide competition and support for Bermudian striker Nahki Wells.

According to reports, Huddersfield are tipped to beat a number of top-flight clubs to the signing of Steve Mounie, a 22-year-old who enjoyed an excellent first season in Ligue 1 last season, netting 14 goals to finish as one of the top ten scorers in France’s top tier.

Mounie used his height to good effect, with only one player scoring more headed goals in Ligue 1 last season than Mounie’s six, while the Benin international also won the most aerial duels in the division.

Huddersfield are considering a bid in the region of £11 million for a player who was also being sought by Premier League clubs, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United and Watford.

Huddersfield are a Premier League team for the first time, and only a year ago spent £1.8 million on German defender Christopher Schindler to surpass the then club record £1.3 million they splashed out on Wells from Bradford City.

Last season Huddersfield scored the least goals out of the top six, with Wells scoring ten.

Huddersfield fans have snapped up some 20,000 season tickets ahead of the club’s first season in the Premier League.

Supporters lined up outside the John Smith’s Stadium from 2am yesterday to purchase tickets and by 12.30pm all available season cards were completely sold out, with the remaining reserved for match-day sales.

Sean Jarvis, Huddersfield Town’s commercial director, said: “Everyone connected with the club should be very proud of this achievement ahead of what will be a landmark season.

The demand for season cards was completely unprecedented, which I believe is testament to all the hard work that has gone into the club over many years.

“Huddersfield Town is a community club and it is superb to see fans coming together to back the team in the new Premier League season.

“I’d like to thank every fan for their patience on what was a testing day as they queued, waiting online or tried to call to get their season card.

“We all appreciate the manner with which you approached this process.”

Huddersfield’s players will return for pre-season training next month, with training starting on July 7 following a general fitness assessment of each player.

The team’s first pre-season friendly is just a few days later, when they play Accrington Stanley on July 12.

They also have away fixtures against Bury and Barnsley ahead of a training camp in Kirchberg, Austria from July 29 to August 5.
