Delray Rawlins will play for Sussex in a four-day match against South Africa A at Arundel that begins today.

Rawlins, who was recalled to the first team squad last week against Leicestershire, but did not play, is in the team to be captained by Harry Finch.

Finch will lead a side with several players who have first-team experience as well as some youngsters, including Rawlins, 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Jake Hutson and Liam Smith, who has been playing for the seconds on trial after coming through Worcestershire’s Academy.

“We’re delighted to give Harry this opportunity to captain the side and I’m sure he will relish it,” said head coach Mark Davis.

“It will be a good test for some of our young guys against a strong South Africa team but it is also an opportunity for them to impress. We’re looking forward to a good four days.”

The South Africa A squad is an experienced one, with eight of their players boasting international caps. Perhaps the best known of their players is off-spinner Dane Piedt, who played in seven Tests between 2014 and 2016, taking 24 wickets at 36.04 each. He is one of only two South Africans to take a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket and is a former schoolmate of Sussex’s Stiaan van Zyl.

Other members of their squad with Test experience are fast bowler Duanne Olivier, who took five wickets on his debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year, and batsman Theiuus De Bruyn, who made his first appearance in New Zealand in February.

Heino Kuhn, who scored 200 in last week’s win over Hampshire, left-armer Beuran Hendricks, Dane Paterson, Reeza Hendricks and Chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi have all played for their country in T20 internationals.
