With the eyes of the world on the island for the America’s Cup, Catherine Quin decided to capitalise.

The Bermudian designer’s resort collection will be on display at the marina at Hamilton Princess on Monday.

US Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Telegraph Fashion and Amuse, the luxury lifestyle channel of Vice Media, are flying in for the event. Ms Quin plans to show them the best of the island while they’re here.

“I’ve been working abroad for the last few years and showing my brand in Paris, in New York,” she said. “I decided it was a good opportunity, while global eyes were on Bermuda, to show it here.

US Vogue has never done a travel diary on Bermuda so it was great to give them a reason to come, and at the same time showcase my collection and give Bermuda exposure within the community that subscribes to Vogue, Telegraph Fashion, Amuse and Harper’s Bazaar.

“All eyes are on Bermuda at the moment, but mainly the sports world. I wanted to show their readers that Bermuda has a lot on the island beyond the sailing. They’re not just here for fashion reporting, it’s much more about the lifestyle of Bermuda — the talent, the fashion and the experience.”

The 33-year-old partnered with Andrea Sundt and Peter Lapsley to transform the Pitts Bay Road marina into a “unique and dynamic space”.

They took their inspiration from 20th-century American artists, painter Robert Rauschenberg and choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham.

Local models, ages 20 to 60, have been hired to reflect the diversity of Ms Quin’s brand. Her garments will be available for immediate purchase on the night at Hamilton Princess boutique Luxury Gifts and in a pop-up at the store that week.

“I wanted to showcase the talent on the island, to put Bermuda on the map as a fashion community,” the designer said.

“There will be a big art installation outdoors on the marina at Hamilton Princess. The audience will be just as important as the models to the event.

“I think nowadays, people are not just looking for a spectacle, they want a more interactive experience, something really unique. And I thought it would be spectacular, with all the superyachts on the dock, to highlight the surroundings, not just the clothes.”

The former lawyer turned her hand to fashion two years ago.

“I’m doing a special capsule for the America’s Cup in the sense that I normally do monochrome, muted colours but this season I’m doing brighter colours.

“The collection is more reflective of water and outdoor living. It’s all made out of silk, so the core values are the same [as my previous collections] — things that you can throw on and go on a boat all day.

“The models are women of all ages. It’s meant to reflect the diversity of the community and women in general, not your standard 18-year-old stick figure. These are women who live in the real world, not just in high-fashion magazines or on a catwalk.”

The event runs 6pm to 8pm at the marina. A limited number of tickets are available at www.paradise32.com
