Warwick Academy gets top GCSE results...again
GCSE results at Warwick Academy were the highest among Bermuda schools again this year.
Students there received a 91 percent pass rate the best the school has recorded thus far.
Saltus Grammar School students saw a 76 percent pass rate; the pass rate at Bermuda High School for Girls was 74 percent.
Despite repeated requests, Government did not release the results for its two senior schools CedarBridge Academy and Berkeley Institute.
Last year, this newspaper was unable to obtain the results until November some five months after the exams were taken.
Warwick Academy principal Maggie McCorkell said her students had performed better than last year, when the pass rate was 89 percent.
"Following on from our very pleasing International Baccalaureate examination results I can now report that the I/GCSE results are the best the school has achieved.
"Fifty-five students sat these exams — 100 percent of the year group — in an average of nine subjects, including mathematics and English.
"The overall pass rate was 100 percent with 91 percent of students gaining five passes and more at grades A* through C.
"These excellent results show a two percent improvement over last year and are particularly rewarding as Warwick now offers more subjects than ever before at this level."
The top students were Harry Secrett (8A*, 1A), Amanda Brown (5A*, 4A), Andreas Ratteray (5A*, 3A and 2B), Megan Berry (3A*, 4A, 1B and 1C) and Daniel Fiddick (2A*, 6A and 1C).
Saltus students achieved a pass rate of 76 percent compared to 79 percent last year.
All 61 students in year 11 sat the exams.
Of the 553 examinations taken, 76 percent were reported at grade C or higher.
Headmaster Ted Staunton said some students in other year groups also sat I/ GCSE examinations. He said the overall pass rate for examinations taken in all years was 77 percent, compared with 75 percent in 2009.
"Students who performed particularly well in the I/ GCSE examinations included Nicholas Barton, with eight A* grades and two A grades, and Hannah Gibbons, with three A*, five As and one B.
"Also gaining A*C passes in nine subjects were Rokeyah Brown, Luigi Cacace, Scott Clarke, Christine Decker, Rhea Gibbons, Scott Gilbertson, Michael Johnston, Kelsey Pichery, Filipe Pontes and Rachael Waldron."
BHS had a pass rate of 74 percent at the A* to C range compared to 85 percent last year.
Principal Linda Parker said: "I am pleased with our GCSE/IGCSE results for this past academic year. All students sat nine GCSE/IGCSE exams, with the exception of one student who sat eight.
"We are particularly proud of all of our students and the results are a reflection of their self-discipline, focus on attaining their goals, and the quality of our teachers."
The top students for the year were Sarah Hopkins (9A*), Julia Dunne (6A*, 1A, 2B), Kristyn Dale (5A*, 3A, 1B), Georgé Wilson (4A*, 5A), Georgina Bell (5A*, 2A, 1B, 1C) and Nicole Wilson (4A*, 4A, 1C).
