Tapestry of tales caught on camera

Amanda Temple

A journey of exploration has brought photographer Amanda Temple’s collection, Tapestry of Tales, to local shelves.

The portraits and their stories were painstakingly gleaned over Ms Temple’s years of knocking on doors.

“I will for ever be grateful for the kindness and candour of all those I visited,” she said.

“People invited me into their homes and shared their stories with me.

“I had originally thought the collection would be a timeless representation of the constellation of characters that call the island home, but as it transpired, it became much more than that.

“Some of the stories reveal insights into the lives of people’s ancestors, while others are relevant to events that are happening now.”

While a “monumental” task, she said it became “unexpectedly, one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling projects I have ever worked on”, with the fruits of her work going on show at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. “My hope was to create a collection of images that would illustrate what a wonderfully diverse community we have and to show that although there are, of course, differences, there are more similarities,” she said.

“People were keen to tell me about what makes them happy and show me their most treasured possessions. I found that these objects were not valuable; they were sentimental.”
